Quality pipe coatings and linings have become a mandatory requirement in the pipe industry in order to protect the metal surface from corrosion and enhance
the useful life to the total pipeline.Coating systems are extremely effective when properly used. They are considered to be the primary line of defense against
corrosion of steel pipeline systems. Recommendation and selection of the coating and lining materials for use on underground and above-ground or underwater
steel pipelines are one of the most important activities of the engineer. The coating performance depends on putting the pipeline into service with the least
amount of coating damage. The coating system selected must not only meet the corrosion control needs, even though it is the main purpose, but must also allow
economical transportation, handling, storage, and pipeline construction with minimal coating damage or repair. In addition, for internal coating and lining, the
protective coating's function is also to maintain a smooth surface to enhance flow capacity. Lining materials selected depend on the products flowing through the
pipe. There are several well- recognized testing procedures utilized in evaluating coating system characteristics related to transportation, storage and
construction. The following tables illustrate these characteristics.
